A History of Excellence & Innovation

Born from a Passion for Flight

The Midwest Air Wing RC Club didn't begin with paved runways, pavilions, or precision-groomed grass. It began with something far more enduring: a shared passion for flight. Tracing its origins to Roxana, Illinois, the club was built around a common dream — not just a flying field, but a community of aviators committed to pushing the boundaries of what model aviation could be. That breadth of spirit, and a willingness to embrace both tradition and innovation, became the club's hallmark.

A New Home, A Bigger Vision

The club's move to Pontoon Beach, Illinois was not a departure from its roots — it was a fulfillment of them. The new field opened up possibilities the founding members had only imagined. With wide, unobstructed skies and room to build something truly exceptional, the club had found its place. And it wasn't done building.

Building a Premier Facility

The infrastructure improvements beginning around 2013 gave the club the foundation to excel. That year, members undertook the installation of a 345 by 45 feet Geotex runway  — a significant investment that transformed the club. A second 450 x 45 runway was added later. Together they form an intersecting layout that accommodates virtually any flying style, from precision aerobatics to 3D freestyle. Two pavilions with fans and electric, a climate-controlled pilots' lounge, generous pit areas, and safety fencing complete a facility that any club in the country would be proud to call home.

The development didn't stop with the runways. In the years that followed, the club continued refining its amenities — adding electricity, startup stands, workbenches, a clubhouse, and night flying capability. Each improvement reflected the same philosophy: if something is worth doing, it's worth doing right.

Innovation as a Way of Life

Innovation has never been a slogan at Midwest Air Wing — it's a way of operating. When the club needed better runways, members researched the options, planned the installation, and executed it themselves. The club has built something that extends well beyond a flying field: a genuine community of aviators united by a love of flight and a belief that excellence is always worth pursuing.  And the story is still being written – come join us and be a part of the Midwest Air Wing community.
